You’re Not Lazy… You’re Misaligned
The procrastination, the resistance, the feeling like you have to drag yourself through every task at work, that’s not laziness. It’s a sign you’re misaligned. Zander Fryer felt the exact same thing in his 9-5, and once he understood what it meant and how to fix it, everything changed. He’s made over $20 million online since.
By the end of this you’ll know what that feeling actually means, why your brain keeps you stuck, and the alignment audit that gets you out. Misalignment, not laziness, is what makes work feel like friction instead of fuel.
What misalignment actually feels like
Misalignment is the feeling of swimming upstream against the current your life actually wants you to follow. Before coaching, Zander was making around $200K a year as an engineer at Cisco. On paper it looked great. He felt completely burnt out because the work wasn’t him.
A mentor asked him what he’d do if he couldn’t fail. The answer was mentor people full-time. The mentor’s line stuck: every moment is either on purpose or off purpose, and every moment off purpose is one you never get back. That next Monday, every meeting felt like stepping on Legos. That was the sign. He quit to chase alignment, and seven years later he’s made over $20 million coaching, spoken on stages across four continents, and helped over 1,400 coaches build six- and seven-figure businesses.
Why this happens to almost everyone
Most people never chose their path, they inherited it from parents, teachers, and a culture that rewards predictability over purpose. According to Dr. Bryan Robinson, writing in Forbes, 93% of Americans are unfulfilled in their 9-5s.
From a young age we get rewarded for what society wants, not what lights us up. Zander was good at math and science, so the question was never what excites you, it was you’re going to be an engineer. Safe, respected, high-paying, it checked every box society cares about. He got great at something that looked right but never felt right. That’s how most people end up here.
Why your brain keeps you stuck
Your brain’s job is survival, not fulfillment, so it’ll keep you in a misaligned situation as long as it feels safe. Think about boiling a frog. Drop it in boiling water and it jumps out. Put it in room-temperature water and slowly turn up the heat, and it stays while it quietly drains.
Same thing happens with misaligned work. You get into it because it’s easy and it’s there. Then motivation drops, focus disappears, and you lose the energy to change anything. That’s how people spend 5, 10, even 20 years in a job they never wanted. By the time they snap out of it, they’re halfway boiled. If you’ve got the motivation to act now, act, before your brain talks you out of it.
How to actually realign: the alignment audit
Alignment doesn’t come from thinking harder or journaling, it comes from an alignment audit, a handful of exercises that get you real clarity. Here are the three Zander used.
- The bucket list: write down 101 things you want to do, be, and have. No filters, no realism, just truth.
- The loves list: write down about 20 things you genuinely love to do, then look for the patterns underneath. Most people land on three to five core drivers that energize them. For Zander it was learning, teaching and helping others, and deep connection on meaningful topics.
- The ideal lives: map your ideal life across five areas, career, finances, relationships, health, and impact. Ask: if I could have it all my way, what would each one look like?
When Zander compared those three exercises to the life Cisco could realistically give him, the answer was obvious. Staying on that path meant missing about 90% of what he actually wanted. After that, no matter how scared he was, it didn’t matter, because he finally knew what alignment looked like. All he had to do was jump out of the boiling water.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I’m misaligned or just lazy?
Laziness is general. Misalignment shows up as constant resistance, procrastination, and burnout around specific work that looks fine on paper. If you can summon energy for things you care about but feel like you’re dragging yourself through your day job, that’s a sign of misalignment, not a character flaw. The fix isn’t more discipline, it’s getting clear on what you actually want.
What is an alignment audit?
It’s a set of exercises that surface what genuinely drives you instead of what you think you should want. The core three are a 101-item bucket list, a loves list where you find the patterns under what you enjoy, and an ideal-life map across career, finances, relationships, health, and impact. Compare the results to your current path and the gap becomes obvious.
Why is it so hard to leave a comfortable but unfulfilling job?
Because your brain is wired for survival, not fulfillment. A stable job feels safe, so your brain keeps you there even as your motivation and energy quietly drain, like a frog in slowly heating water. That’s why people stay stuck for years. The move is to take action while you still have the motivation, before the comfort wins.
